It’s the first thing you hope for when you start a new job. It's something that can make the difference between a company’s growth and a quick unpleasant death: Community.

After taking on forms such as a TV sitcom title, an overused hashtag (que Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake), and a quadrillion hip company core value info-graphics, the term “community” has been devalued. When we say community we do not mean: pie in the sky utopia or singing Pharell’s “Happy” while holding hands. So, let's define community. It's a group of people who are unified. The question is, who is the community and what is Mixer Direct’s community unified around? What unites and creates community is shared internalized truth. We mean a people rallied around a common vision.

Theological Roots

The community at Mixer Direct feels like a family. But, we must confess, community is far from easy. We are human and humans are flawed. However, when rooted in the right foundation, community can bring about joy and happiness from the top down and the bottom up at your business.

What unites and creates community is shared internalized truth. Mixer Direct’s founder’s take on community is rooted in their view of God. If you are going to base community off of something, shouldn’t it be based upon the very person who created it? This stems from the belief that community is reflective of the relationship God has within Himself in the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). In light of our founder’s Biblical Christian world view, their belief is that no one has demonstrated this better than God and what He has done in the person and work of His son Jesus. His work actually allows right relationship to take place and allows us to be a part of His family.

Not Just Community Outreach, But In-Reach Too

Community outreach has become quite popular. So why has the business world ignored community in the workplace? Our community is a result of intentional relationship and engagement that permeates the entire company. We're not just talking about awkward water cooler talk. Engagement creates space and freedom for authentic relationship to develop. Relationship allows for growth which creates acknowledgement and respect for each other in their specific roles. As one author puts it, “Community grows naturally out of shared experience, and the more intense the experience, the more intense the community.” A company that is internally engaged in community will profoundly effect customer interactions, and encourages development and aspiration within the company. This can also help create momentum and real desire to steward, sustain, and convert work into good results. When engagement takes place, individual roles intersect with company goals. In turn, dignity and meaning are often found within community.

We've addressed the facade of a hip info-graphic with the best looking 10 core values you have ever seen, but what about community rooted in unhealthy soil? I think if we're being honest with ourselves we can confess that we’ve all seen a different type of community take place at some time or another in life. One that is birthed out of double talk, dissatisfaction with leadership, and disagreement with the vision for the business. This type of community is cancerous. We’re not saying that no matter the situation you should mindlessly chug the company kool-aid like its going out of style. There is no doubt that “Yes Men” do not equal healthy community. However, we believe that when it’s rooted in a healthy foundation, consciously adopting and participating in company vision and culture can make all the difference. Adopting the vision at Mixer Direct is a natural thing to do because it is downright contagious when you experience a company that actually values its community of employees and shares its success with its people.
