What are elastomeric coatings?

Elastomeric coatings are super thick liquid coatings that can be applied to roofs or walls as a flexible, durable sealant. It is about 10 times thicker than paint and is usually water or acrylic latex based. They work by bonding with the surface they are painted on to create a flexible sealant that flexes as the structure settles and expands.

Applications for this type of coating usually pertains to outer surfaces of concrete and stucco structures. They help seal cracks in the concrete and stucco without having to use unsightly patches that you have to paint over to match your existing paint. They can also be used on roofs to seal leaks and protect from the elements. They usually dry clear so roof colors are not affected. Elastomeric coatings can also be used as paint, and can have color added to provide a distinct look while offering its unique types of protection.

The benefits of using these coatings are numerous. When applied, they bridge hairline cracks to prevent the cracks form getting bigger. They provide waterproofing against driving rain and wind. Elastomeric coatings can also provide protection from certain types of damage.

These coatings also are resistant to solvents and microorganisms. It also retains its color for a long time. Many manufacturers offer 10 year warranties on the coatings. Elastomeric coatings also dry fast and smooth without any offensive or dangerous odors.
