How Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams Is Making Better Ice Creams

With the hot and muggy summer months quickly approaching, the ice cream market is preparing for their busiest time of the year. The varieties of ice cream have become increasingly gourmet and foodies have been delighted by the new selection of unique flavors. How The Jeni's Story Began

The story begins with Jeni Britton Bauer in 1996. At the time, Bauer was an art student at The Ohio State University, but her true passion was artisan desserts. Her aspirations began to form while she was working at the French bakery, La Chatelaine, and eventually she dropped out of school to pursue her dream. In 1996, she opened her first prototype artisan ice cream store in Columbus. A few years later, she launched Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. The company now has stores in Columbus, Cleveland, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, Charleston, and Los Angeles. Additionally, their products can be found in various retail locations nationwide. Jeni’s strives to go above and beyond their expectations by delivering top-notch customer service and quality in order to bring people together with their products. They purchase their milk from a small farm in rural Ohio, which has been frequently cited as one of the ingredients that sets their ice creams apart. Utilizing what they call “The Fellowship Model”, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream takes advantage of 21st century tools while remaining loyal to a classic style that combines growers, makers, producers, suppliers, and customers into their ground-up production cycle. They maintain strong relationships with their vendors in order to provide higher quality in their ingredients. Adhering to such an inclusive method requires much more time and effort, but Jeni’s is devoted to their formula for success.

Award Winning Creativity 

It didn’t take very long for Bauer and the rest of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream to take off and gain an almost cult-like fan base. Bauer has written two cookbooks- “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream at Home” published in 2012, and a follow-up volume entitled “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Desserts” released in 2014. Both books are winners of the James Beard Award, which is recognizes excellence in the culinary arts; and were reviewed well by critics with The Wall Street Journal. Others have also spoken highly of Bauer and culinary creativity. Fast Company identified her as one of the most clever minds in the business, and Food & Wine praises her by saying, “No one else makes ice cream like Jeni Britton Bauer”. 

 

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams

One cannot help but be tempted by the enticing descriptions of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams products. Jeni’s partnered with the prestigious espresso bar Intelligentsia to forge the Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso ice cream, combining Jeni’s critically-acclaimed artisan ice cream with an equally eminent coffee company. Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk is described as being reminiscent to a bowl of fresh strawberries and cream. They also offer several different varieties in the chocolate range, as well as a vanilla ice cream with the beans sourced from the fairtrade Ndali Estate in Uganda. Many might not be aware of the fact that ginger ice cream was once one of the most beloved flavors in the United States, but Jeni’s pays tribute to the past with their delicious candied Ginger adaption. Luxardo Cherries Jubilee presents the palate with tastes of Italian cherries and sweet brandied cream. Jeni’s succeeds not only in fine-tuning old school classics flavors, but also in bravely going where no creamery has gone before. The wildberry lavender combines the aromas of blackcurrants, cream, fresh milk, lavender and orange. Ice cream sandwiches like chocolate hazelnut, oatmeal cream, orchid vanilla, and salty caramel with smoked almonds pair two cherished desserts with one another. Jeni’s added to their repertoire by introducing frozen yogurts and sorbets, both of which are just as inventive as their ice creams. Just to top it all off (pun not intended), Jeni’s concocted a bittersweet chocolate hot fudge sauce, a honey butterscotch sauce, and a salty caramel sauce.
