What Are Agricultural Chemicals?

There are many different types of agricultural chemicals that are highly effective in helping farmers and ranchers to a better job. They are often used in direct management for animals or plants. Alternatively, they can be applied to the land or housing where plants and animals are raised. Finally, they can be applied to the water used to give thirsty plants and animals a drink. Considering the different types will help you decide which ones are right for your operation.

Why Food Producers Use Agricultural Chemicals?

There are many different reasons that farmers and ranchers use agriculture chemicals. The ones that they choose are based on their objectives. Since chemicals can be very expensive, producers always have an end goal in mind before they use any chemical.

Managing Plant Reproduction

If weeds are not stopped from reproducing, they can quickly overtake a farmer’s crops. Weeds quickly rob soil of nutrients that plants need to thrive.

Fulfilling Nutritional Requirements

Farmers also use chemicals to take good care of their land by adding nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and other nutrients to the soil. Healthy soil is not only important to increasing crop production so that everyone can have enough to eat, healthy soil helps to stop erosion. Healthy soil also supports animal biodiversity, and it helps protect water quality.

Managing or Eliminating Pests

Over 75 percent of all species on earth are insects. The agriculture industry uses many different types of chemicals to manage or eliminate pests including herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. If growers did not use chemicals to control pests in their fields and orchards, crop yields would drastically reduce.

Vetrinary Care Use

The use of chemicals is very important to good veterinary care in animals. It helps reduce stress in animals allowing them to receive the treatment that they need without feeling undue stress. In fact, many of the agricultural chemicals used in veterinary care are also used to treat animals.

Preventing or Treating Medical Conditions in Animals

Veterinarians also use highly regulated agricultural chemicals to treat medical conditions in animals. Vets often use agriculture chemicals to help them control infectious disease. Some of the most common infectious disease in animals that can be carried to humans like:

Anthrax

Arbovirus

Avian Influenza

Herpes B

Brucellosis

E. Coli

Leptospirosis

Lyme Disease

Rabies

Ringworm

Salmonelosis

West Nile Virus

Zika Virus

These diseases and others that are passed from animals to humans kill about 2.2 million people each year. Veterinarians also use vaccines to protect animals from infectious disease. Just like dogs at home need vaccinations, farm animals also need vaccines to keep them from getting sick from preventable diseases causing them to suffer and to reduce microorganism transmission within a group of animals living in close proximity. Ranchers also use agricultural chemicals to provide treatment against parasites like lice, blowflies and ticks. Sometimes, chemicals are also used so that animals feel less pain.

Stop Problems Post-Harvest

Producers also apply some chemicals after they harvest fruits and vegetables. While some of these agricultural chemicals are designed to help food retain water and stops the browning process, some also help prevent foodborne illnesses like E. Coli and L. Monocytogenes by killing microorganism. People who love to eat fruits and vegetables from all over the world can be thankful that producers apply chemicals that are approved for human consumption to their delicious food.

What Agricultural Chemicals do Producers Use?

Producers use a variety of chemicals depending on their objective. They use insecticides so that bugs do not eat field crops, and fungicides to control diseases in the food that we and animals eat. Occasionally, they use insect-fungicides to accomplish both tasks at once. Farmers may also use herbicides so that weeds do not overtake their field crops. They may also apply plant growth regulators to promote or inhibit plant growth. They may also use attractants deterring harmful insects by their odors or repellents to deter birds and mammals from eating their crops. Since mice and rats multiply so prolifically, they may also apply rodenticides. Often times, chemicals are combined with a spreading agent so that the chemical goes on at the right consistency.

Farmers and ranchers use agricultural chemicals in many different ways. If you are a producer, then thank you for all the hard work that you do to take care of our food and the land producing it. If you need containers to mix your chemicals, then we would love to discuss your needs with you.
